Do you remember the song "Over the river and through the wood to grandmother's house we go. Hurrah for fun, is the pudding done? Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!" Well, my kids learned the one that went: "A turkey sat on a backyard fence and he sang this sad, sad tune..."

Peninsula Reading Carnival draws hundreds in from the cold

The Kenai Peninsula Reading Council held its 5th Annual Reading Carnival at Soldotna High School last Saturday afternoon. Some 1,000 people from across the Kenai Peninsula attended and had the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun and educational activities to promote awareness and enthusiasm for literacy. With temperatures reaching a high of -20 during the day plenty of people were happy for the indoor event and opportunity to get the kids out of the house for some fun. ?Unfortunately we weren?t able to get the big red fire trucks outside. It was just too cold to park outdoors, but we had a lot going on inside for the kids,? said CES Fire Marshall Gary Hale, ?We have coloring and activity books that all relate to fire safety for the kids, so this is a great opportunity for us to get out in the community to promote safety as well as literacy.?

Performers are top-notch

I just cannot believe the talent we have in this community. I am talking about the "King and I" play in Kenai. I really never paid attention to the plays put on by the Kenai Performers until my twin daughters got a part in the play directed by Carol Ford.

Soldotna Community News

Good Monday Soldotna. If you haven't noticed, they're back! That's right, last week I spotted two motor homes, or, as I like to call them, land yachts. Granted, they had Alaska plates, but it is only a matter of time until we have visitors from all over. It was tempting to groan about the thought of clogged roadways, congested riverbanks and crowded campgrounds, but it is a great reminder that we live in a wonderful place so wonderful that people will travel thousands of miles to come and visit.

Kenai Community News

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! What's your favorite part of this happy season? Shopping? Baking? Communicating with family and friends of Christmases past? I hope some of you said giving because if ever there was a time of year that lends itself to that noble activity, it's now.
