On the mend

Ruben Pereyra has left the hospital, but his battle with the ravages of flesh-eating bacteria is not over yet. Pereyra, a Juneau school bus driver who was flown to Seattle for treatment of the rare but dangerous disease in June, spoke to the Empire for the first time this week. "I'm feeling a lot better than I did a month ago, a month and a half ago," he said. "It's kind of scary leaving the hospital, but I'm excited at the same time."
