Golf season kicks off at Birch Ridge

This past weekend was spectacular, absolutely gorgeous. With the golf course fairways and greens in the best shape in recent memory, things were going in the right direction. Then a dose of reality was handed to us and we were reminded that yes, this is Alaska and the weather will change.

Birch Ridge Golf Report: Birch Ridge golfers have formed tight bonds over the past 2 decades

After moving to Soldotna from Anchorage almost 20 years ago, my husband and I started golfing at Birch Ridge Golf Course. Over the years, the people and friends we have made have become part of our family. Unfortunately, we lost of member of our family recently, Marge Smith. Marge was the wife of Tom Smith, who is the founder, architect and builder of Birch Ridge Golf Course. We are blessed to have known Marge and thankful for her contributions to our lives and the community. To Tom Smith and his children, Ward, Jennifer, Curtis and Bart, thank you for giving our community such a wonderful gift.

Birch Ridge Golf Report: 24 youngsters learn the basics of golf at Birch Ridge Golf Course

"Hook a Kid on Golf" is underway with 24 kids partaking in a program that teaches the basics of golf and allows students to continue with their golf education. The program is free and is sponsored by the Birch Ridge Golf Association and the Boys and Girls Club. The 24 junior golfers were selected by lottery from 47 applicants. There have been a few golfers that began playing at Birch Ridge at a young age and today work in the golf industry. Chances are there is one in the program underway this week.

Birch Ridge Golf Report: 'Hook a Kid on Golf' program attracts several youngsters to Birch Ridge

After a week of "Hook a Kid on Golf," we've now got more than 40 kids participating in the Junior Golf Clinic. The junior golfers are fortunate to have not only course pros Tom Walsh and Bill Engberg providing guidance, but also former Birch Ridge Junior Golfer Aaron Dexheimer. Aaron holds a few records on Alaska golf courses, including the course record at Birch Ridge and winning the Alaska State Amateur in 2000. Aaron is now a touring pro playing in pro golf tournaments in Alaska, California and the Pacific Northwest.

Nostalgia abounds at course

There has been a lot of nostalgia around the golf course for me these past few weeks. Last week was the Junior Golf Clinic. An amazing 43 juniors turned out to learn from the pros - Tom Walsh, Bill Engberg and Nolan Rose - and pick up some pointers. On Friday I watched the parents as they observed and walked with their junior golfers. It brought back fond memories of the times when I accompanied my junior golfer around the course as he played in various tournaments.

Birch Ridge Golf Report: Course greening up at Birch Ridge

While the temperatures have yet to warm up, things sure have been greening up. The rains have been beneficial with everything looking fantastic. Work crews just completed plugging and seeding the greens. I expect to see these in fine shape in a few short weeks.
