Pet projects

Two separate community service projects in Kenai and Nikiski have a couple things in common; both ideas originated from students and were directed to help make a positive impact in the lives of pets.
1 injured in house fire

A man at his Nikiski home sustained severe burns from a house fire Tuesday morning and was transported to an Anchorage hospital by LifeMed, according to a release. In the first few minutes of Tuesday, firefighters responded to a residential fire on Groleske Avenue. The home was fully engulfed when responders arrived, and the blaze threatened to move into the nearby wild land area as well, according to a release from the Nikiski Fire Department.
Shot in the arm: KPC EMS program continues to grow

Straight-faced, Luke Michael casually congratulated Darren Finley on successfully inserting an intravenous catheter into his forearm as blood poured from his vein. Finley mumbled a "thank you" and then began to self-critique his first attempt.

The Kenai Police Department is looking forward to better communication between itself, the Soldotna Police Department and Alaska State Troopers this year. Approximately six years after upgrading the department's dispatch center to include digital technology, the Kenai Police Department will be able to communicate with other peninsula and state law enforcement agencies via the Alaska Land Mobile Radio (ALMR).
6 injured, 4 critical in Nikiski collision

Six people were injured, four critically, Wednesday night in a high-speed, head-on collision near Mile 19.5 of the Kenai Spur Highway in Nikiski.
