Though production on Margaret wrapped in late 2005, the future of the film came into question when Lonergan's original edit clocked in at approximately 180 minutes and Fox Searchlight executives balked at the titanic runtime. Lawsuits ensued, and eventually a series of filmmakers including Martin Scorsese came aboard to help produce an edit that would both preserve the filmmaker's artistic vision and satisfy the studio's demands for paring the story down.
