Homer Advisory Committee votes against wolf control

...seem at all reasonable to do wolf control if at first you have a habitat problem," said advisory committee member George Matz. "The goal in 15A is reallocation of moose to human harvest," McDonough said of the Board of Game proposal. Advisory...

Voters can clear confusion

Wildlife Management at a crossroads

During the Palin/Parnell era, ADF&G has, with its abundance based ideology (i.e. game ranching), become a socialistic entitlement agency that wants to put a moose/caribou in every hunter's freezer - regardless of conservation principles or hunting ethics. To make matters worse, the BOG is aggressively trying to privatize Alaska's wildlife resources by passing regulations that favor commercial hunting and commercial services for hunters, like expensive guided trips for non-residents.

Legislature needs to repair Board of Game

It's time for the Legislature to repair the fence. In its surreptitious attempt to privatize wildlife, has the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and its sidekick the Board of Game imploded? A once proud agency/board, built on noteworthy competence and diversity of opinion has become a narrow-minded organization that serves fraternal friends. An allocation system based on need (AS 16.05.258), now oozes with greed. Some highly prized hunting permits are going to the highest bidder, with more in the works. Forget the average guy. The ideals of our Constitution are more like deals.

Can we trust the Pebble permitting process?

I attended the public presentation given by Pebble Partnership last week in Homer. I asked Mike Heatwole, vice president of public affairs, how much public land would be off-limits to hunting if Pebble is approved. He said this will be "negotiated" with the Department of Natural Resources. This gets to the heart of what's wrong with State's permitting process. Instead of meeting definitive criteria established a priori, important aspects of permitting will be negotiated; in essence a politically-based call.
