At first, they tried to pick up every fish head or gut they found, but that soon grew overwhelming so they settled for just collecting trash. Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday a team of teens in bright-orange shirts bearing "ROC the Kenai" logos descended on the North Beach of the Kenai River dipnet fishery intent on picking up trash and educating beach-goers about the proper disposal of fish waste.

Last Wednesday on a post card perfect day more than 80 members of Boys and Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula gathered at Centennial Park in Soldotna for a free fishing trip complements of the Kenai River Professional Guides Association. "A lot of these kids have never been out on the river fishing before so today we have twenty guides who have donated their afternoon to take the kids out for time of their life," said Boys and Girls Club executive director Natasha Ala.
The City of Kenai has nearly completed its dune restoration project, which targets the dunes along the mouth of the Kenai River, said Bob Frates, parks and recreation director.

ConocoPhillips' Superintendent of the Kenai LNG Facility, Peter Micciche presented a generous check to the Boys and Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula at the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce luncheon last Tuesday. The $25,000 check is intended to supplement ConocoPhillips' support for youth development programs at all seven Boys & Girls Club locations on the Kenai Peninsula. Micciche praised the Boys and Girls Club mission and staff. "For a job very well done and for the well-being of the youth of the Kenai Peninsula for over 20 years," he said. "I am proud to be a career employee of a company willing to invest in stronger communities. The company philosophy has been to determine where the Peninsula community feels support is most important, and they have provided generously to those organizations, which is why we have supported the Boys and Girls Club, The United Way, The Food Bank and many other community-sustaining organizations," added Micciche.
