Bikers blessed for safe travel, ask drivers to be alert

As engines rumbled, gasoline pumped and the prayers started to flow, Bert Heitstuman said he was confident the Kenai Peninsula is a generally safe place to ride motorcycles. But that's not to say a biker's worst nightmare can't come true at any moment. "I had a woman here last year look right in my eyes as I was coming down the highway and she was coming out of a parking lot," he said. "She looked right at me and pulled out right in front of me. She says, 'Well, I didn't see you.' Lady, you looked right in my eyes."

Bowling up breakfast

There's lots of reasons why a student might come to school with an empty stomach, but volunteers from Love INC are doing what they can to make sure they don't go to class that way.

Past efforts don't go unnoticed

I am speaking on behalf of many local agencies, nonprofit groups, schools, churches, families and students. We stand together to express our appreciation to Alaska Bikers Advocating Training and Education (ABATE) members for their contributions to our community at Thanksgiving time.

ABATE members go on shopping spree to fill up Santa's Sleigh

They choose to ride big bikes rather than reindeer, but when it comes to being Santa's little helper, they're one of the biggest on the Peninsula. They are the men and women of ABATE, Alaska Bikers Advocating Training and Education.
